A Neurophysiological Approach to our Highest Performance
ON AND OFF THE COURT
Welcome to the Play Zone
ALIGNING WITH OUR PHYSIOLOGY
Contrary to popular culture, it's not all in our heads. In fact, the key to unlocking our potential is through our physiology. As the first of its kind to apply Polyvagal Theory to the area of performance, the Play Zone is a paradigm shift in performance psychology that masters the mental game through the body. Between our highest potential and our performance when it really counts, is a neurophysiological variable, regulated by our autonomic nervous system, we can manage to our advantage. This is what separates a champion and aligns us with our highest potential. This is the PLAY ZONE!
The Problem
A body in defense isn’t capable of optimal performance, no matter what we THINK.
The Solution
Meet the body where it is & align our physiology to support peak PERFORMANCE.

Polyvagal and Play with Michael Allison
Rooted in Science
GROUNDED IN THE SCIENCE OF POLYVAGAL THEORY BY STEPHEN W. PORGES, PH.D.
Neuroception
Beneath conscious awareness, our nervous system is always scanning for cues of risk and cues of safety in the environment around us, inside our own body, and between us and others.
Hierarchy of Bodily States
Shifts in bodily state occur reflexively and unconsciously in a predictable sequence based on whether we feel safe, in danger, or overwhelmed by threat.
Manage our Physiology
Through body, mind & relational strategies, we recognize our adaptive reactions and regain control of our physiology to support our intentions, resilience and performance.
ONLINE COURSE
The Play Zone
This on-demand training provides recorded presentations with Michael Allison & Stephen W. Porges Ph.D. exploring a unique application of Polyvagal Theory to performance psychology and deconstructs the theory into an accessible language we can understand and basic principles that translate not only to performance, but into leading a Polyvagal-informed life.
In the Press

Why This Matters
Every single aspect of performance, from power, to endurance, to mechanics, to execution; even problem solving, creativity, confidence & belief - all are built on top of our bodily state. More than getting faster, fitter and more skillful, we can train for peak performance by developing our capacity to manage our bodily state in any situation.
We can ramp up, calm down, and stabilize in the optimal zone for the current situation through recognizing our bodily reactions to "pressure & stress" and regaining control of our physiology. This is what it really means to be in control of our emotions, our mind, our body, and ultimately our performance.
When we recognize what zone we are in, and where that lands in the performance hierarchy, we can manage our bodily state and shift into the zone that best matches the situation.
Beyond the Court
Competitive sports, especially when money, status and identity are on the line, are a metaphor for what it’s like to be human. The field of play - whether that’s professional sports, leading an organization, performing on stage, engaging in an important relationship, or navigating the workplace - magnifies the reflexive bodily reactions we all experience throughout our lives.
Polyvagal Theory provides a map for how our body subconsiously, autonomically, adaptively responds to features of safety & threat in the environment (internal, external & relational spaces), triggering a cascade of bodily changes & feelings that either promote or interrupt our health, resilience and performance. When we apply the theory to performance beyond the court, we see the theory as basic principles of how to live. If we don’t understand our own resource, our own physiology, and how it either opens up the world for us, or limits our experiences and interactions, we simply can’t optimize our health, resilience, performance and quality of life.
“I am pleased that you have been able to expand the applications of Polyvagal Theory. With the development of The Play Zone, you have provided a visual and visceral model that has many important applications. In general, all work environments in which evaluation is the constant underlying theme parallels this. It's not like we can give up our hypervigilance - we have to manage that need to be safe enough to function at a high level. I would say that the business world, academic world, any competitive world, has all these same features. Thanks for helping us expand the impact of Polyvagal Theory.”
